Recently we have had a dinner at Abeno Too, an authentic Kansai based ‘Okonomiyaki’ restaurant, or some of you may refer to it as Japanese savoury pancake. Located in Covent Garden, only moments away from the Leicester Square Station, is one of the only restaurants that serves Okonomiyaki in London along with its main branch in Bloomsbury. Okonomi-yaki is best known as the soul food of Kansai people – predominantly in Osaka prefecture, and Hiroshima prefecture. However, if you ever or have visited Japan you can find it anywhere in the country with their own twist.
The basic ingredient of the pancake batter consists of flour, grated yam, water or dashi (Japanese cooking stock made from grated bonito and kelp), eggs, spring onion, and shredded cabbage. To this batter, you can add various ingredient of your choice (Okonomi) such as seafood, poultry, vegetables, cheese, etc., and grilled (yaki) on the hotplate, hence that is the origin of the name of this Japanese pancake. Just like the authentic okonimi-yaki found in Japan, the pancake in this restaurant is topped with okonomiyaki sauce (similar to Worcestershire sauce but thicker and sweeter), aonori (seaweed flakes), katsuobushi (bonito flakes), Japanese mayonnaise, and pickled ginger.
There are 2 sizes available for your Okonomi-yaki which are deluxe, and super deluxe. Unless if you’re planning on ordering side dishes, we would recommend you to order a super deluxe. Another option if you don’t want to order any side dishes is to ask for a Om-Soba; similar to an Okonomi-yaki but instead of having a thick pancake, fried noodle is wrapped in an omelette-like layer topped with the same topping as the regular Okonomi-yaki. In the end we decided to share a prawn Om-soba, super deluxe sized Cottage-pie Yaki (Organic Minced Beef Fillet, Potatoes, Green Peas with a grilled Cheddar Cheese topping), Agedashi Tofu (A deep-fried Tofu dish with Bonito fish flakes and grated Ginger), and Genmai-cha (type of green tea) each. We have been to Abeno Too several times before and it’s definitely one of our favourite dinner date destination after work, or if we happened to be around the area. Not only its filling, its also delicious, and we enjoy watching the food being prepared right in front of us every time we come here.
Usually you’ll be seated at the bar so that it will be easier for the waiting staff to prepare the food for you. However, if you come in a group of 3 or 4 (note there is a limited space), or if you come during the ‘off peak’ time (before 5pm) there is a chance you could have your own table by the window.
